酒門神社

Ibaraki

Located in the town of Okachimachi, Ibaraki Prefecture, the Sake Gate Shrine is a small Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami (spirits) believed to reside at the intersection of three roads: Iwatsuki, Kita-ikeda, and Utsunomiya. The shrine's architecture reflects its Kamakura period origins, with a wooden torii gate and a traditional haiden (main hall). Visitors can observe the shrine's unique Saka-machi style entrance, which features intricately carved wooden pillars adorned with lanterns. The shrine is said to be associated with the mythological god Susanowo, one of the three gods of the Shinto pantheon.

Visitor tip

Upon arrival, purchase a 'saisen' paper ticket at the shrine's ticket booth and receive a special blessing from the shrine staff, allowing you to pass through the torii gate.

Cultural notes

The Sake Gate Shrine is known for its traditional New Year (Oshogatsu) festival, which typically takes place on January 1st. During this time, visitors can participate in rituals and games, as well as enjoy local sake and food stalls.

Historical note

The shrine was founded in the Kamakura period (1185-1333), during the rule of the Minamoto clan.
