Located in the heart of Ibaraki Prefecture, Ryōsenmae Shrine is dedicated to the god of war and fertility, Ryūjin and Amaterasu, as well as the god of agriculture, Susanoo. The shrine's name, Ryōsenmae, translates to 'the place where Ryūjin appears.' Visitors can explore the shrine's main hall, which features a large wooden pillar dedicated to Ryūjin. The surrounding area is also home to several smaller shrines and temples, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Ibaraki.

Visitor tip
When visiting Ryōsenmae Shrine during cherry blossom season (late March to early April), head to the main hall's eastern side for an impressive view of the blooming sakura trees.
Cultural notes
Ryūjin, the god of war and fertility, is often depicted with a dragon-like creature, known as Ryūjin-tō. The shrine's annual Festival of War (Boshin no Matsuri) honors this deity and features traditional performances, such as martial arts demonstrations and sword fighting.
Historical note
The shrine was built in 1780 by the Ōtomo clan as a tribute to their ancestral deity.
