Located in the scenic town of Wakkanai, Ibaraki Prefecture's Hayato Shrine is dedicated to the Shinto god of the sea and fertility, Kaniebiko, as well as the god of prosperity and good harvests, Okuninushi. Visitors can explore the shrine's traditional architecture, including its distinctive tiled roof and wooden torii gate, which date back to the Heian period. The shrine is also famous for its beautiful gardens and peaceful atmosphere.

Cultural notes

In the spring, Hayato Shrine hosts a festival in honor of Kaniebiko, with traditional dances and offerings to ensure a good catch for fishermen. The shrine is also said to be visited by sea spirits, known as 'tsukumogami,' which are believed to inhabit the nearby coastline.

Founded in 718 CE during the Nara period, Hayato Shrine has been a major Shinto shrine in Ibaraki Prefecture for over 1,300 years.
