Cultural notes
Kashima Shrine is associated with the mythology of the Japanese sun goddess Amaterasu. According to legend, the mountain was chosen by Emperor Shōmu as a sacred site after being visited by Amaterasu in disguise, who appeared as a deer to guide him.
