Cultural notes
Hachiman is also revered as the god of war and protection. In Shinto mythology, Hachiman is believed to have been instrumental in the defeat of the Taira clan during the Genpei War (1180-1185 CE). The shrine's name '吉住' roughly translates to 'auspicious place' or 'lucky spot', reflecting its connection to good fortune and prosperity.
Historical note
The shrine's current main hall was rebuilt in 1873 after being destroyed during the Boshin War.
