風王大神

Ibaraki

Fūdō-ō Daikannon is a Shinto shrine located in the town of Tomida, Ibaraki Prefecture, dedicated to the Wind God and the Buddha Fudō Myōō. The shrine's name, Wind King Great God, reflects its primary kami, the god of wind and storms. Despite being located in an area prone to natural disasters, the shrine has been rebuilt several times due to damage from earthquakes and typhoons. Its current structure is a reconstruction from 1961, but it still maintains its traditional architecture.

Cultural notes

As the god of wind and storms, Fūdō-ō Daikannon is often invoked for protection against severe weather. The shrine's architecture features a prominent windsock-like torii gate, which helps to calm the winds. Locals believe that on certain days, you can still see the shadow of the old wooden torii gate, which was destroyed in an earthquake.

Historical note

Founded during the Nara period (710-794 CE), with subsequent rebuilds and renovations throughout the centuries.
