八幡神社

千葉県 · 鴨川市

Located in the city of Kamakura, prefecture of Kanagawa, but also believed to be the original and primary shrine of the region, Hie Shrine in Tokyo, is said to have a branch in 鴨川市 (Nihonbashi), however, it is believed that the shrine originally came from the region of Kanto or Sagami. This Shinto shrine is dedicated to the god Susanoo-no-Mikoto and is famous for its vermilion paper lanterns that light up at night. The shrine is also known for its beautiful garden and historic architecture.

Cultural notes

This shrine is famous for its vermilion paper lanterns and beautiful garden, which are used during the annual Omiyamari Festival in July. During this festival, giant statues of Susanoo-no-Mikoto are paraded through the streets.

Historical note

The shrine was originally built in the Edo period but was destroyed during World War II. It was rebuilt after the war in 1951.
