Inari Okami Shrine, located in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, is one of the oldest and most famous Shinto shrines dedicated to Inari, the kami of rice, industry, and fertility. The shrine's architecture reflects the traditional style of a Shugoin-zashi shrine, with two large halls and numerous smaller shrines dedicated to various regional deities.

Visitor tip
To experience the shrine's unique atmosphere, visit during the Inari Saisei Festival in May, where thousands of torii gates are erected to honor Inari Okami.
Cultural notes
Inari Okami is known for its numerous fox statues (kitsune) that serve as messengers between humans and the kami. According to legend, these foxes can grant wishes to those who treat them with kindness.

The shrine was founded in 757 AD during the Nara period by Prince Namuharu.
