Nikko-san Shinto shrine in Miyagi Prefecture is dedicated to the legendary hero of Japanese mythology, Ryujin. Located near the scenic Nikko Lake, the shrine features a mix of Heian and Kamakura architectural styles. The complex includes the main hall dedicated to Ryujin, as well as shrines for various regional kami, including Amaterasu and Fujin.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes
Nikko-san is famous for its Futsu no Ko festival in July, a celebration of the mythical child of Ryujin and a local princess. The festival features traditional dances, music, and food stalls. Visitors can also explore the nearby Toshogu Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Historical note
Founded in 741 AD by Prince Naka no Ōe, making it one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines.
