白飛稲荷

Osaka

Located in the heart of Osaka, White Flying Inari Shrine is a lesser-known yet charming Shinto destination. Dedicated to Inari Okami, the Shinto god of rice and fertility, the shrine is famous for its unique ' flying deer' statues made of wood and lacquer. These deers are believed to represent Inari's loyal servants, who bring good fortune and prosperity to those who make offerings.

Cultural notes

Inari is often depicted with multiple faces and hands in Shinto art and literature, symbolizing its role as a bringer of fertility and abundance. White Flying Inari Shrine is also known for its traditional Japanese New Year's (Oshogatsu) festivities, which include visits from the shrine's enshrined deities.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1915, but its roots date back to the 17th century.
