楠公神社

Kagawa

Located in the city of Takamatsu, Shikoku Island, Nantan Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Katsunokami no Okami and Katsuragi-no-kami, two kami associated with cedar trees. The shrine is famous for its beautiful autumn foliage and historic significance as an important site for the Japanese Imperial family. The main hall of the shrine was rebuilt in 1962 using traditional materials and designs, while the outer shrine has been preserved since the Edo period (1603-1868).

Visitor tip

To fully appreciate the shrine's beauty, visit during the autumn foliage season (mid-November to mid-December) and take a stroll through the surrounding cedar forest.

Cultural notes

The shrine is connected to local folklore as it is said that Katsuragi-no-kami, one of the enshrined kami, was responsible for guiding travelers along the Iya Valley. During the autumn festival, 'Autumn Leaves Festival', visitors can enjoy traditional dances and food stalls.

Historical note

The shrine was visited by Emperor Meiji in 1889.
