浮島神社

Located in Chiba Prefecture, Floats Island Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami of the sea and islands. The shrine is situated on a small island surrounded by water, believed to be the dwelling place of the deity. According to legend, the shrine was built after a fisherman prayed for safe passage and received a vision from the god of the sea, who appeared as a giant wave that washed away his worries.

Visitor tip

To avoid getting wet during your visit, consider arriving early or late in the day when the tide is low. Be sure to take a boat to cross to the island, as it is not connected by land.

Cultural notes

Floats Island Shrine is famous for its unique architecture and beautiful gardens. The shrine's main hall features an impressive wooden torii gate, while the surrounding gardens are adorned with a variety of plants and flowers, including cherry blossoms and hydrangeas. During the spring festival (Hanami), visitors can enjoy traditional music, dance, and food while admiring the blooming flowers.

The shrine was founded in the Edo period (1603-1867) and has been rebuilt several times due to natural disasters.
