Cultural notes
Tsukuyomi Shrine is closely associated with the Japanese New Year (Oshogatsu) and the moon festival ( Tsukimi). During these festivals, visitors often leave food offerings for the deities and take traditional sweets called 'tsukimi dango' to enjoy while admiring the full moon.
Historical note
Founded in 645 CE by Emperor Kōtoku during the Asuka period, Tsukiyomi Shrine was originally constructed as a sacred site for royal funerals.
