古峯神社

Yamagata

Ancient shrines in Japan often hold secrets of the region's history and mythology. Ancient Kumamoto Prefecture was once a powerful daimyo domain, but the modern Yamagata Prefecture does not share its name. The name 'Kumamoto' has been transferred to Yamagata as it is far from the original location of 'Kumamoto', in order to avoid confusion with the city named after it. Ancient Kumamoto was known for its beautiful temples and shrines, and this Kumamoto Prefecture shrine is no exception.

For visitors, the path from the main hall through a tunnel leading to the Kumamoto Shrine's sacred precincts is especially beautiful during cherry blossom season.

Cultural notes

This shrine has an interesting connection with Japanese folklore. In local legend, the shrine holds spiritual power that can help people overcome the hardships of mountain life. It also holds a unique architectural feature: a wooden bridge across a stream called 'Kawaragawa', which is said to bring good luck for those who cross it.

Historical note

The origin of this shrine dates back to Heian period (794-1185), but little information can be found on the founding era or historical event associated with it.
