Fushimi Inari Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto, and is famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates that form a tunnel up the mountain. Although it was originally built in 711 CE, the current structure dates back to 1633.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes
This shrine is dedicated to Inari Okami, the Shinto god of rice, fertility, and prosperity. The shrine is also known for its fox spirits, which are believed to be messengers of the kami.
Historical note
The original founder was Empress Koko, but the shrine was rebuilt during the Edo period by Tokugawa Ietsuna.
