Indra Shrine, located in Iina Town, Saitama Prefecture, is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan, with a history dating back to the Nara period (710-794 CE). The shrine is dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami, the sun goddess, and Inari Okami, the god of rice and fertility. Its unique structure features a large torii gate and a beautiful garden designed by landscape architect Isamu Yosano in 1927.

Visitor tip
To experience the shrine's tranquility, visit early in the morning or late in the evening when the sunlight filters through the torii gate, casting a warm glow over the garden.
Cultural notes
In addition to its spiritual significance, Indra Shrine is also famous for its beautiful gardens and traditional festivals. The shrine holds an annual Autumn Leaf Festival (Koyo Matsuri) in November, featuring stunning displays of fall foliage. During the festival, visitors can participate in traditional activities such as tea ceremonies and yamabashi (river washing), which are believed to purify the soul.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt in 1614 after being destroyed during the Shimabara Rebellion.
