Chiba

Tōsan-mya, or Tō-san-miya, is a Shinto shrine located in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Dedicated to the kami Tsuchi and Hachiman, it showcases traditional Edo-period architecture with wooden gates and roofs. The shrine's grounds feature a unique design resembling a pair of wings, said to symbolize protection for both the living and the dead.

Visitor tip

When visiting Tōsan-mya, be sure to ring the large bronze bell twice to purify your spirit before making an offering.

Cultural notes

In addition to its primary deities, Tōsan-mya also enshrines the kami of education and learning, Koshinokami. During the spring equinox festival, visitors can participate in a ritual dance to ensure good fortune for academic pursuits.

The shrine was built during the late Muromachi period, circa 15th century.
