Cultural notes

Inari Shrine is associated with the legend of the fox spirit Inari Ōkami, who was said to have helped the god Susanoo-no-Mikoto retrieve a magical sword. The shrine's many fox statues and shrines dedicated to Inari's sacred fox spirits add to its unique charm.

Historical note

The shrine was founded in 947 AD by Emperor Nanzen and has since been rebuilt several times due to fires and natural disasters.
