厳島神社

Hokkaido

厳島神社 is a Shinto shrine located on Sakhalin Island, not Hokkaido, but the main island of the island was used as its alternate location. The shrine is dedicated to the sea god, Amaterasu-ōmikami's, aspect, Ōfune no kami, and is known for its beautiful gardens and unique torii gate. It has also played a significant role in Japanese history, serving as a spiritual base for early explorers and settlers of Sakhalin Island.

Cultural notes

Ōfune no kami, the primary deity enshrined at厳島神社, is associated with the sea and navigation. The shrine also celebrates the Sea God's Day (Kaijin no Hi) in November, a festival honoring the patron deities of fishermen and seafarers.

Historical note

The shrine was built in the late 19th century to honor the spirits of Japanese settlers who arrived on the island.
