Located in the scenic town of Daigo in Ibaraki Prefecture, Kokubunji Taisha is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami and the storm god Susanoo-no-Mikoto. Visitor tip
Visit the shrine's gardens during cherry blossom season to experience the beautiful scenery, or try a traditional tea ceremony at the onsen (hot spring) located within the grounds.
Cultural notes
Kokubunji Taisha is believed to be the ancestral home of the Taira clan and is said to hold the power to ward off evil spirits. The shrine is also famous for its traditional folk performances, including the ' Daiko drum' performances.
Historical note
The shrine was founded in 1188 during the Kamakura period by Emperor Go-Toba.
