Fukuyama Hachiman-gu is a Shinto shrine located in Fukuyama, Okayama Prefecture, and is dedicated to the deity Hachiman, the patron kami of war and military victories. The shrine was established in 718 CE during the Nara period and is known for its impressive architecture and beautiful gardens. Visitors can explore the main hall, which features a striking vermilion torii gate, as well as the adjacent shrine grounds where samurai warriors once trained.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes
Fukuyama Hachiman-gu is an important site for martial arts training and is said to be the burial site of the legendary warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune. The shrine also hosts an annual festival in May, where participants reenact a ritual battle between good and evil.
Historical note
The shrine was originally founded by Emperor Shōmu in 718 CE to serve as the burial site of his son, Prince Tadahito.
