Located in the heart of Akita, Sanriku-sansho Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine dedicated to the sea god Ryujin and the patron deity of shipwrecked sailors, as well as the god of the Sanriku Coast. The shrine's architecture reflects its regional kami and historical significance, with a unique roof style characteristic of the Akita region. The shrine's main hall features a striking red lacquered exterior, while the inner sanctuary houses a sacred tree believed to be over 1,000 years old.

Visitor tip
Visitors can purchase a special lottery ticket at the shrine to participate in the annual 'Sanriku-sansho Lantern Festival', where lanterns are hung from trees along the coast, offering breathtaking views of the Sanriku Coast.
