Cultural notes
Kagutsuchi is one of the most significant deities in Shinto creation mythology. According to the Kojiki, his fiery birth killed his mother Izanami, leading to her descent to the underworld and his own death at the hands of his father Izanagi. Despite this tragic origin, he became an important protective deity associated with controlled fire and metalcraft.
