Located in the city of Kanuma, Gunma Prefecture, Mara no Heado Kannon is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the Buddhist goddess of mercy, Kannon. The shrine's unique name, Mara no Heado, translates to 'Mara Head' or 'Devouring Mara,' likely referring to the mythological demon Mara who represents desire and craving. According to local legend, the shrine was built in 1631 during the Edo period to counterbalance the influence of Buddhism in the region.

Cultural notes

Mara no Heado Kannon is also associated with the local legend of the 'Yokoyu-no-Tsurugi,' a powerful sword said to be able to vanquish evil spirits. The shrine's grounds feature several historic stone lanterns and a beautiful garden.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt after being destroyed by fire in 1953.
