Located in the city of Kanuma, Gunma Prefecture, Mara no Heado Kannon is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the Buddhist goddess of mercy, Kannon. The shrine's unique name, Mara no Heado, translates to 'Mara Head' or 'Devouring Mara,' likely referring to the mythological demon Mara who represents desire and craving. According to local legend, the shrine was built in 1631 during the Edo period to counterbalance the influence of Buddhism in the region.
