Visitor tip

To fully appreciate the shrine's beauty, visit during cherry blossom season ( late March to early April) and take a stroll along the nearby Kusatsu River.

Cultural notes

As one of Japan's '80 Shinto shrines,' Iwategami Shrine is believed to possess sacred power to ward off evil spirits. The shrine's main hall, the Haiden, features an impressive vermilion gate and a wooden structure adorned with traditional carvings.

Historical note

Founded in 1664, Iwategami Shrine was originally built to commemorate the founder's victory over rival clans.
