Aomori

Seven Gates Shrine is a Shinto shrine in Aomori Prefecture, located near the Tsugaru Kaikyo Bridge on the northernmost tip of Honshu. The shrine is famous for its seven gates, which symbolize the connection between heaven and earth. The gates are adorned with sacred trees, lanterns, and intricate carvings. Visitor tip

To experience the best of the shrine's gates at sunset, plan your visit for around 5-6 pm in summer or early morning in winter. Bring warm clothing as it can get chilly near the bridge.

Cultural notes

Seven Gates Shrine is associated with the god Ryujin, who is revered as the Shinto patron of fishing and the sea. The shrine's architecture is characteristic of the Kamakura period, with a rectangular main hall and a wooden torii gate.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in 1717 after being destroyed by a fire during the Edo period.
