川端天満宮

Kawanishi Tenmangu Shrine, located in Nagano Prefecture, is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, a revered Shinto deity and patron of learning and literature. This shrine is one of the many Tenmangu shrines across Japan, but it has preserved its unique cultural heritage and architectural style, which reflects the rich history of the region.

Visitor tip

To appreciate the beauty of the shrine's gardens, visit during cherry blossom season ( late March to early April) and enjoy the stunning displays of sakura.

Cultural notes

As with other Tenmangu shrines, Sugawara no Michizane is revered for his role as a patron of education and literature. The shrine is also known for its beautiful vermilion torii gate, which is said to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune.

Historical note

The shrine was established in 1846 to commemorate Michizane's role as a governor and scholar during the Heian period.
