Historical note

Like other Tenjin shrines throughout Japan, this shrine was established to honor Sugawara no Michizane (845-903), a prominent court scholar and politician who was posthumously deified as Tenjin, the kami of learning, literature, and thunder. Following his death and subsequent natural disasters that were attributed to his vengeful spirit, shrines were built across Japan to appease and honor him.
