小田八幡宮

Shimane

小田八幡宮 is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of rice and prosperity, Inari Ōkami, located in the town of Hikawa, Shimane Prefecture. The shrine is situated at the confluence of the Hata River and the Yonai River, considered a sacred site due to its beauty and spiritual significance.

Visitor tip

To make an offering of rice grains to Inari Ōkami, purchase a bag of special 'senbei' rice crackers from the shrine's gift shop and head to the torii gate. Place one cracker into the lacquerware box at the gate for good luck and prosperity.

Cultural notes

As part of its Shinto traditions, 小田八幡宮 hosts an annual 'Matsuri' festival in November, where visitors can participate in rituals, food stalls, and local entertainment. The shrine is also known for its unique architectural style, featuring a blend of traditional Shinto and Japanese Buddhist elements.

The shrine was built in 1885 by the Shimane Shinto Central Association, which aimed to unify Shintoism across the region.
