Located in the scenic town of Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture, 鹿島神社 (Kashima Shrine) is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of rice and fertility. The shrine is famous for its picturesque thatched-roof temple hall and serene surroundings. Visitors can stroll through the beautifully maintained gardens and explore the adjacent Kashima Kuyo Shrine, which houses a replica of the legendary Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine in Kamakura.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes
Kashima Shrine is associated with the legend of Kashima-maiwaishi, a mythical rice spirit said to have brought prosperity to the area. The shrine also hosts an annual Kashima Matsuri festival in May, featuring traditional dances and offerings to ensure a bountiful harvest.

The shrine was founded in 1840, during the Edo period, as a result of the consolidation of several smaller shrines in the area.
