金刀比羅宮

Kochi

This major Shinto shrine is dedicated to Ōmononushi, a powerful kami associated with sea protection, good fortune, and safe travels, making it a vital pilgrimage destination for maritime communities and travelers throughout Japan. Located on the slopes of Mount Zozu in Kagawa Prefecture (not Kochi), the shrine is famous for its demanding 1,368-stone step climb to the main hall, which pilgrims undertake as an act of devotion and purification. Visitors seek blessings for safe voyages, business prosperity, and protection from maritime disasters, while many also come to experience the spiritual journey of the arduous mountain ascent itself.
