Located in the city of Ōtawara, Ōtama City, Gunma Prefecture, Ōtawara-jinja is a historic Shinto shrine dedicated to the deity of agriculture and fertility. With its rich history dating back to the Edo period, this shrine has witnessed numerous events and transformations throughout its existence. Its name roughly translates to 'the mountain top shrine.'

Visitor tip

Visit the shrine's main hall, where you can see traditional Shinto decorations and artwork. Be sure to ring the temple bell, known as 'daruma,' three times to purify your mind and body.

Cultural notes

Ōtawara-jinja is also famous for its unique festival called the 'Ōtawa Festival,' which celebrates the deity's power over agriculture and fertility. The shrine is also connected to the legend of Ōtama no Okuninushi, a legendary hero who defeated a dragon terrorizing the region.

Historical note

The shrine was originally built in 1685 during the Edo period as a substitute for an old shrine located on Mount Kumanose.
