Visitor tip

Ōtawara-jinja is also famous for its unique festival called the 'Ōtawa Festival,' which celebrates the deity's power over agriculture and fertility. The shrine is also connected to the legend of Ōtama no Okuninushi, a legendary hero who defeated a dragon terrorizing the region.
Historical note
The shrine was originally built in 1685 during the Edo period as a substitute for an old shrine located on Mount Kumanose.
