Located in the city of Yonago, Tottori Prefecture, Utsukushima Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the sea god Susanoo-no-Mikoto and his sister Otohime. Cultural notes
Utsukushima Shrine is closely tied to Japanese folklore and mythology. According to legend, Susanoo-no-Mikoto sailed from the shrine to defeat the storm god Amaterasu, saving Japan from destruction. The shrine also hosts an annual festival in May, known as the 'Matsuri,' which honors Susanoo-no-Mikoto and celebrates the arrival of spring.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt after being destroyed by the English fleet during the Battle of Tottori Bay in 1871, but its origins date back to the Heian period (794-1185).
