厳島神社

厳島神社 is a Shinto shrine located on the island of Shikoku, which separates Honshu from Shikoku, and serves as a sacred site marking the boundary between the two islands. The shrine is dedicated to the kami of the sea, Oinaginoomi no Kami, who is believed to have been the god of the sea that created the Iya Valley on the northern part of Shikoku.

Visitor tip

To fully appreciate the scenic views of Iya Valley, it is recommended to hike from the shrine down to the river and then along the Iya River which flows into the Sea of Japan.

Cultural notes

厳島神社 has historical significance as the site where Emperor Kanmu prayed for a successful campaign against the Emishi tribe in the northern part of Honshu. The shrine also features a statue of the god Oinaginoomi no Kami, which is said to have been built during the Edo period.

Historical note

The shrine was founded during the Nara period (710-794 CE) by Emperor Kanmu as a result of his journey with his troops through the region in search of new resources.
