Hieizan Taisha Shrine, also known as Hie-bu-jinsha in Japanese, is a Shinto shrine located in the town of Echizen, Shiga Prefecture. Dedicated to Hachiman-gami, the god of war and patron deity of samurai, this shrine has played a significant role in Japanese history. Built during the 8th century, it was originally constructed as an imperial temple but later converted into a Shinto shrine.

Visitor tip
To avoid crowds, visit the shrine early in the morning or late in the evening when the sun is not too harsh, and take advantage of the shaded area under the main hall's roof to rest and enjoy the tranquility.
Cultural notes
Hieizan Taisha Shrine is famous for its annual Hachiman Matsuri festival, which takes place in July. The shrine is also associated with the legend of the Minamoto clan, who were said to have sought the god's protection before their famous battle at Dan-no-ura.
Historical note
The current main hall was rebuilt in 1816 after a fire destroyed the original structure.
