Cultural notes

清神神社 is associated with the legend of Kotohira no Okami, who was said to have been awakened by the sound of a bell. The shrine's bell tower, built in 1913, is still rung every day at sunrise and sunset to purify the air and drive away evil spirits.

Historical note

The shrine was founded in 718 CE by Emperor Shōmu, who built it as a Buddhist temple before converting to Shintoism.
