Cultural notes
As one of Japan's most important Shinto shrines, Eight Horse Shrine is deeply connected to the mythology of Hachiman. According to legend, Hachiman was called upon by Emperor Shōmu for his guidance during the wars against the Emishi tribe, and in return, the emperor enshrined Hachiman at this very location.
Historical note
Founded in 735 CE by Emperor Shōmu, Hachimangu was originally built to honor the war god Susanoo-no-Mikoto but later came to be associated with Hachiman.
