葛原正八幡宮

Tokushima

Geku Jishuu Taisha is a Shinto shrine located in the heart of Matsuyama, Tokushima Prefecture. The shrine was originally built in the 16th century as a Shingon Buddhist temple but was later converted to a Shinto shrine during the Edo period. The Enma-oki Shrine and the Ben'en Kannon Temple were also influenced by this historical transformation.

Visitor tip

For a unique souvenir, visit the shop near the main gate that sells handmade crafts and traditional sweets.

Cultural notes

The Enma-oki Shrine is famous for its connection to the Buddhist tradition of punishment in the underworld. Visitors can find enshrined statues of the god Enma and also observe a ritual performance during certain seasons.

The shrine's name is derived from its founder, Geku Jishuu, who was a Buddhist priest.
