Cultural notes
Akakawa Shrine is famous for its 'Suzumebachi' wind bell, a traditional instrument that plays a haunting melody in the wind. The shrine is also associated with the legend of Fujin and Raijin, two prominent kami who were said to have battled each other at the site.
Historical note
Founded in 1601 by Tokugawa Iemitsu, Akakawa Shrine was originally constructed as a humble village shrine but was later rebuilt and expanded during the Edo period.
