Historical note
This shrine is part of the extensive network of Tenmangu shrines established to honor Sugawara no Michizane, the 9th-century court scholar who was posthumously deified as Tenjin. Following his death in exile in 903 CE, shrines dedicated to his spirit were built across Japan to appease his vengeful ghost and later to venerate him as a deity of learning.
