白山神社

Miyagi

白山神社 is a Shinto shrine located in Miyagi Prefecture, dedicated to the kami of Mount Zao, which overlooks the city of Sendai. The shrine is situated at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters above sea level and is considered one of Japan's most scenic shrines. White-tailed eagles, which are known as 'shiro-kan,' are said to nest on the nearby mountain peaks, adding to the shrine's natural beauty.

Visitor tip

To fully appreciate the scenery surrounding the shrine, visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the light is golden, and look out for white-tailed eagles soaring overhead.

Cultural notes

Mount Zao is said to be a sacred place where the local god, 'Hinokami,' resides. In Japanese mythology, Hinokami is believed to have created Mount Zao by striking it with his divine hammer.

Historical note

The shrine was built in 1734 during the Edo period and has undergone several renovations since its construction.
