Indra Shrine, located in Shikoku, is one of the most famous Shinto shrines and a major center for the worship of Amaterasu Omikami. Dedicated to the protection of crops, health, and fertility, Indra Shrine's significance extends beyond its role as a shrine dedicated to a local kami. Its unique architecture, believed to be inspired by the mythical palace of Amaterasu, is said to embody the sacred power of the Japanese sun goddess.

Visitor tip

Bring a small portion of sake as a donation to the shrine's donation box, allowing visitors to participate in the custom of 'o-ishi-mai,' the traditional ritual of pouring sake for the kami.

Cultural notes

As one of Japan's most important Shinto shrines, Indra Shrine is closely tied to the mythology of Amaterasu Omikami. The shrine also celebrates the Obon festival with a lively Bon Festival, as well as various local festivals such as the 'Dōranyu' or 'Festival of Dancers,' which takes place in late September.

Historical note

The shrine was originally built in 734 during the Nara period and rebuilt after an earthquake in 1978.
