Located in the city of Nissoda, Shizuoka Prefecture, the Jingei Shrine is a lesser-known Shinto shrine dedicated to Hachiman, the god of war and medicine. The shrine's architecture reflects its historical significance as an important stop on the famous Nakasendo highway, which connected Kyoto and Edo (modern-day Tokyo). While it may not be as well-trodden by tourists as some other shrines in Japan, Jingei Shrine remains a treasure trove of Shinto history and culture.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes
Hachiman, the primary kami enshrined here, is also associated with protection from war and illness. The shrine's torii gate is adorned with a sacred bell that rings to signal important events, such as weddings and births. During Cherry Blossom viewing season (spring), the shrine holds a special festival in honor of Hachiman.

Established during the Edo period (1603-1867), the shrine was designated as a 'jogai' - an important stop on major travel routes.
