Tenjō no Takamatsu, also known as the Shrine of Amaterasu Ōmikami, is a Shinto shrine located in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. Dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu Ōmikami, one of the most revered deities in Japanese mythology, this shrine is deeply rooted in local tradition and history.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes

Tenjō no Takamatsu is famously known for its magnificent vermilion torii gates and beautiful gardens. The shrine also hosts the annual Tenjō Taikai festival, a sacred event where Shinto priests perform rituals to ensure the continued blessings of Amaterasu Ōmikami.

Historical note

The shrine was originally constructed during the Nara period (710-794 CE) by Emperor Shōmu, making it one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan.
