Water and Heavenly kami Shitenno-ji Temple is one of Japan's oldest temples, dedicated to the worship of water and heavenly deities. The temple was founded in 593 AD by Prince Shotoku during the Asuka period as a Buddhist temple, but later converted to Shintoism after his death. Today, it is a unique blend of Buddhist and Shinto traditions.

Visitor tip
To fully appreciate the temple's historical significance, visit during the Cherry Blossom season (March-April) and explore the grounds after sunset when the temple lights up.
Cultural notes
Shitenno-ji is a significant site in Japanese mythology, said to be the dwelling place of the heavenly god Susanoo-no-Mikoto. The temple also hosts an annual autumn festival called Aki Matsuri, where visitors can watch traditional dances and see lanterns adorning the grounds.
