春日神社

Shizuoka

Harudayama Shrine, located in Shizuoka Prefecture, is dedicated to the Sun Goddess Amaterasu and also enshrines Inari Okami, a deity associated with rice, prosperity, and industry. The shrine's architecture reflects the Heian period style, characterized by its vermilion gates and shachihoko (lion dogs) at the entrance. Visitors can explore the serene garden and traditional buildings, including the main hall and the five-story pagoda. During the spring equinox festival, locals gather to pray for good harvests and prosperity.

Visitor tip

To make the most of your visit, plan your trip during cherry blossom season (late March to early April) or autumn foliage (mid-November to mid-December).

Cultural notes

The shrine is famous for its Shachihoko statues, which are said to have been given by the great general Minamoto no Yoshitsune. The five-story pagoda is also notable for being made from solid oak and features a unique architectural style.
