八幡神社

Shiga

Located in the city of Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture, Eight-horned Shrine is one of Japan's most iconic Shinto shrines. Dating back to 718 CE, during the Asuka period, the shrine honors Benzaiten, a kami associated with music, poetry, and fertility. The shrine's architecture reflects its connection to the sea, with a distinctive 'hagure' roof design inspired by fishing boats. Visitors can admire the shrine's beautiful garden, which features over 100 stone lanterns, or take a stroll along the nearby Nagahama Harbour.

Cultural notes

Benzaiten is often depicted with eight horns, which symbolize fertility and prosperity. The shrine's famous 'hagure' roof design is said to have been inspired by the horned helmets worn by samurai during the Sengoku period.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in 1321 CE after being destroyed during the Nanboku-chō period.
