Tenjin shrines are easily recognized by their association with plum blossoms, which Michizane loved, and the presence of ox statues, as oxen are considered sacred to Tenjin.
Historical note
Tenman shrines were established across Japan following the deification of Sugawara no Michizane in the 10th century. As a prominent court scholar and poet who was later exiled and died in 903 CE, Michizane was posthumously honored as a kami when natural disasters were attributed to his vengeful spirit, leading to his worship as Tenjin, the god of learning.
