Cultural notes

Tenjin Shrine is closely tied to Japanese education and learning. According to legend, Sugawara no Michizane was granted a single peach tree, which produced one peach every five years. The peach was said to have healing properties and the shrine still offers peach-flavored tea to visitors today.

Historical note

The shrine was founded in 940 by Emperor Murakami, who moved it from a earlier temple to its current location.
