Located in Akita Prefecture, the Tenmangu Shrine is dedicated to Sugawara no Michie, a legendary scholar and poet from the Heian period (794-1185 CE). The shrine's name 'Tenmangu' roughly translates to 'Shrine of the Heavenly Shinto Emperor,' reflecting its connection to the mythological ruler Amaterasu Omikami. Cultural notes
In Japanese mythology, Sugawara no Michie is often depicted as a wise and pious scholar who served as an advisor to Emperor Seiwa. The shrine's Haiden (main hall) features a striking example of the Japanese 'five-story pagoda' architectural style, which was heavily influenced by Chinese designs.
Historical note
The shrine was originally constructed in 750 CE by Empress Gemmei as a tribute to her father, Prince Nijō.
